What it means to be Present
Be present AND be present!
this newsletter is a mental tap on our shoulder to settle our mind and focus on the person and topic right in front of us. You know what I mean when I say you can be "present without being present".
It happens to all of us that we carry ‘baggage’ from previous (and future!) conversations and settings over into our current moment. We are distracted and emotional. We don’t pay attention. While we 'sit' with the new person (online or offline does not matter), we are mentally still somewhere else. We often believe we can ‘wing it’, but we fool ourselves here. Our distraction is transparent to others and has a real impact.
And, let's not forget: While your family members might tell you in the face, your own team members likely won't, given the risk they would have to take, if they shared with their own boss how disappointing it feels when the other person is only half-way there.
An illustration of presence
There is this nice song text by Gerhard Schoene that illustrates presence quite well. The German song is called 'Ganz einfach' ('so easy') and the lyrics roughly translate like this:
(Setting: A young man talks to his father)
"I rush all day long, and, in the end, I feel I get nothing done. I'm just a nervous wreck. Can you explain to me how you are so calm and relaxed?"
The old man scratches his left ear and says,
“My dear, listen well. I do it this way. It is very simple:When I sleep, I sleep.When I get up, I get up.When I eat, I eat.When I plan, I plan.When I go, I go.When I work, I work.When I speak, I speak.When I listen, I listen.”
The young man responds, ‘What is this nonsense? I do all that, and yet I find no peace.’
“My dear, listen well, you do it all slightly differently:When you sleep, you already get up.When you get up, you already eat. When you eat, you already plan. When you plan, you already go.When you go, you already work. When you work, you already speak. When you speak, you already listen. When you listen … you already sleep.’
😊
Sounds roughly familiar?
Summary
Coaching draws most of its power from a relationship of trust and full presence. It is a sign of our fast times that full presence has become a rare gift that you can give to someone. It means to fully TUNE IN to the person(s) who you are with and to TUNE OUT the distractions in your mind, no matter from the past AND the future.
The good news: Establishing our own internal presence is mostly in our power. No excuses:)
p.s. Hope you enjoyed this. As a newsletter subscriber, you get our articles 1-4 weeks before we publish them publicly, likely on LinkedIn. Please use your power wisely:)
The IntelliCoach Conversations App is Live!
A small side note: I am super happy and proud to share that IntelliCoach has its own first app in iOS and Google Play! The 'IntelliCoach Conversations' app is part of the integrated program experience for members. It allows members to connect directly with each other and it integrates perfectly with intellicoach.com. I shared all about it in this LinkedIn Post, if you are curious!
Have a great week ahead!
