Factors of Coachability!

What makes someone coachable? Let's find out! AND we have reason to celebrate!! Hey 👋 Welcome to a visually refreshed newsletter. I hope you like to the new design!

22. August 2021

I do not claim that the 8 factors below are complete. However, they represent in my experience what is important in a client/coachee to benefit from coaching. It builds on and was inspired by Tom Henschel's own reflection on this topic (Link).

Let's get into it.

What makes someone coachable?

1️⃣ Has Desire to Change

Does the coachee want to change their behaviour or do they feel pushed? You will have a hard time coaching someone if they don’t have an innate desire to improve in the area that you discuss.

2️⃣ Accepts Feedback

Is the person able to process feedback in a reasonable way? Can the person examine their own part in the results they are getting? Does the person see perceptions others have as reality?

3️⃣ Has Awareness on own Strengths and Weaknesses

Is the person able to talk in a balanced way about their strengths + weaknesses? Without constant defensiveness? The person should be neither too self-condemning nor too self-infatuating. We are looking for well-developed judgment and humility towards themselves, a great foundation for solid growth.

4️⃣ Is open to new ideas

What new thoughts did this person have in the past year? Is the person regularly exploring beyond what is there and is trying to find new ways? This openness will allow the person to evaluate new ideas with motivation and clear-headed thinking, rather than defensiveness.

5️⃣. Is willing to risk something

Does this person demonstrate the courage to regularly step out of their comfort zone? Are they willing to try something new and different? Can the person tolerate discomfort and failure with a positive mindset and learning approach? This willingness is a great asset that helps an otherwise reserved person to grow far beyond what they thought possible.

6️⃣ Has Learning attitude

Does this person enjoy learning? Are they naturally curious about themselves and others? Are they driven to improvement? This attitude is like an engine pushing the person forward. They will embrace coaching quite naturally as a tool to improve themselves.

7️⃣ Shows a Growth Mindset

Do they believe that everyone has room to grow? Do they realise their ability to change fundamental areas of their behaviours?

A growth mindset gives a great natural flexibility and hunger to improve.

8️⃣ Is Emotionally Healthy

The person must be able to manage themselves. Coaching is not therapy. must be free from addictive behaviours or chemical substances.

Summary 💡

Do you need to have all these 8 present in your client for coaching to work? No.

If No. 8 is there + 2-3 more, you have a very good chance that coaching can work well.

The list above also confirms another truth about coaching: It works best with people who already do well and who want to maximize their personal and professional potential. It's important never to forget that!

A final note before we go 🚶🏽

“There’s no comfort in the change zone, and no change in the comfort zone!”

Food for thought:

Where does your comfort zone end?

Where does your change zone begin?
