How to upgrade your standard 'Thank You' to something Powerful!

Appreciation is undervalued. Go beyond a simple "thanks" by acknowledging the effort, impact, and specific actions. Strengthen your relationships!

Appreciation is a super easy and widely underused tool in the corporate world. It's more than just saying "thanks" - it's about recognizing the specific thing someone did for you, acknowledging their effort, and expressing how much it meant to you.

For example:

❌ Manager: "Thanks for working overtime last night, Sarah. I appreciate it." Team member: "No problem." (moves on with work with a *meh* response)

✅ Manager: "I just wanted to take a moment to thank you, Sarah, for staying late until 11 pm to finish that project deliverable last night and making sure it meets all client criteria. I know you took two extra, final communication rounds for that. I can also imagine the kind of effort it took to manage that with your family. I can say that the impact is felt. Because of your stretch, we were able to meet our deadline and impress the client, last minute. This means a lot to all of us and gets us some much needed breathing space."

Team member: "Thank you. I am also glad how it worked out." (*beaming*)

Here's a quick overview of the elements of such a powerful 'thank you':

❶ Thank the person for something specific they did for you.

❷ Acknowledge the effort and sacrifice it took for them to help you.

❸ Tell them the difference their action made (personally and to the organization).

As you can see, a good thank you goes beyond a simple expression of gratitude. It shows that you truly value and appreciate them. So, when your team members go above and beyond, try giving them a powerful thank you and see how it strengthens your relationship with them.

It's surprisingly hard to overdo it! (One common objection I get.)

Have a great week ahead!
