Do you WANT Coaching?

Embrace humility in leadership; as Jim Yong Kim emphasizes, being coachable is essential. Practice what you preach to enhance credibility and depth.

“One of the most important things about leadership is that you have to have the kind of humility that will allow you to be coached.” - Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank from 2012-2019

It is quite simple: When I want to be credible as a Coach-like Leader to my team members, I have to be willing to demonstrate that I am embracing coaching myself.

Why is that so?

Reason No 1: Depth

One of my coaching mentors: “Maik, get coached a LOT! You will notice over time, that you can take someone else only as far as you have gone yourself.”

I can personally confirm this. The depth of my coachee experience is the ceiling of the depth I can achieve with my clients. The deeper I go, the deeper they can go.

Reason No. 2: Credibility

When someone asks for coaching, it shows humility. Someone who asks for help does not believe they have outlearned their area, are superior to others and that there is not much to learn for them. It is very damaging to our intent, if your actions send the message: ‘I don’t need coaching, but I think YOU are!’ Actions speak more than words here.

So when was the last time YOU asked for coaching?

Wish you a fantastic week!
