here's a little holiday message that I also shared on Linkedin this week! Enjoy!

---------

How many people can you interact with at the same time without burning out? Turns out, there is a suggested answer for that:

It's roughly 150!

This is the so-called 'Dunbar' number (after an anthropologist with the same name).

(Source: Wikipedia: Link)

For me, this number also offers a different insight: that CARE and ATTENTION are limited resources.

Technology, automation and mass-customisation are NOT the way out. This just tries to scale and reduce effort from something that NEEDS effort to work in the first place.

If you feel genuine CARE by something, it is because they give you the most valuable thing they have: their attention and time.

Funny enough, a few years ago, I started to maintain my own 'Dunbar list' without knowing about the concept yet. And I noticed that my list has not reached 150 people yet!

I love working through this list many times a year.

I did it this week again and I enjoy it so much.

Here's what someone commented on my linkedin post:

"According to the same theory, the tightest circle has just five people – loved ones. That’s followed by successive layers of 15 (good friends), 50 (friends), 150 (meaningful contacts), 500 (acquaintances) and 1500 (people you can recognise). People migrate in and out of these layers, but the idea is that space has to be carved out for any new entrants."

This matches my own experience strangely well. How about you? How many people are on YOUR Dunbar list? And how do you distribute your limited resources?

With that thought...I wish HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all who receive my weekly insight share. Thanks for sticking around and for all the feedback and encouragement!

p.s. I recorded a short holiday podcast episode this week that touches on the same thing. Hope you enjoy it!
